So, it was a long interview with him, and the interviewer just brings up aliens. I hear that if I read enough books, I’ll start getting it, it’ll start to sink in, but.Įventually you’ll sound like you know what you’re talking about. I’m really into science, but I don’t really get all of it. It was posted on the internet, and that quote I used in the book is a very small portion of the interview. And then, just by accident, like a long time later, I ran across this interview with Stephen Hawking. And that terrified her, the isolation of some horrifying event like that. They’ll roll their eyes at you, like yeah, you were abducted by aliens. If you dare tell anyone, they’re just gonna think you’re crazy. That’s not even in my top fifteen! I don’t sit around worrying about that! But she said, no, think about it - it’s not only the terror of being abducted by some other life form, but the realization that nobody’s going to believe you. She didn’t even hesitate she said, “Aliens.” It was one of those 4 in the morning conversations, and all of a sudden I go, what is your biggest fear? Cause I didn’t know I never asked her that question. The Fifth Wave came from two basic things: one was a conversation with my wife. I mean, adventure, like following people and undercover work.įorgive me if I have trouble believing that!Īt the start of The Fifth Wave, there’s a chilling quote by Stephen Hawking – Did you find it before or after getting the idea for the story?īefore. I won’t put down the IRS I met my wife there, you know, and had fun some days. But it finally did, and I was able to leave the job, so you know, it all worked out. So, it was kinda like I was a writer who took a day job, thinking ‘oh I’ll just pay my bills for a couple years until my writing takes off’, but it took a little bit more than a couple of years. I don’t even know it’s IRS, so I go to an open house they’re throwing, and between the bean dip and the pie there’s this sign that says The IRS. You know, I couldn’t find a teaching job, and it was like, I had an English degree, so I opened up the paper and there was an ad for government work. )įirst of all, if you have dreams of being a writer, I don’t need the competition, so just - Nah, I’m kidding. I opened up the newspaper one day, I was badly needing a job because if you have an English degree. I knew I wanted to be a writer since I was in 7th grade, and it just took a long time coming. RICK YANCEY: It wasn’t like I was a tax collector who woke up one day and decided I wanted to be a writer. We want to know how you made the transition from IRS tax collector to full time writer. THE COZY ARMCHAIR: Okay, so this question is actually one of the more boring ones. What can you expect from the interview?
